Description
After the destruction of the Encarnación convent in 1812 the center of Seville was created, which would be the food market known by the same name. In 1973, given its unfortunate condition, it was demolished and the merchants were placed in provisional facilities, which would become almost permanent for almost 40 years.
The Plaza de la Encarnación in Seville in its future
historical has gone through a multitude of incidents, as attested by the latest archaeological data and different sources. In the first months of 2011, the completion of a construction process for the new space was witnessed. After almost forty years, the return of the “plaza de abastos” that started in the 70s has been completed, in the place it occupied. The protagonists of this story have been mainly merchants who have shown great patience throughout this time. During the first months of 2011 we made a photo essay on the merchants of the Incarnation. The final idea was to turn it into an exhibition of portraits of merchants, with which we pay tribute to these people who have known how to wait for such a long period of time, and see how a place was built that will surely become the future in a reference of the city. This process has undoubtedly marked them personally and family, with our work we intend to make a photo essay of their day to day. The final objective was the realization of a series of individual portraits that finally formed a collective portrait of the market.
The report is specified in a portrait exhibition to make an exhibition, which will be located in the crypt space, nowadays called the Antiquarium Museum. Being this space just below the current “plaza de abastos”, where at the same time we can admire the archaeological remains of different historical periods of the plaza.
